When most homeowners picture hail damage, they imagine cracked shingles, missing pieces, or obvious holes in the roof. In reality, hail often leaves much subtler signs behind.
That can make hail damage especially difficult to identify from the ground. Your roof may look fine after a Central Florida storm, but individual shingles may have suffered damage that can create opportunities for leaks later. If you notice any of these unexpected signs of hail damage, contact Taylor’s Roofing.
1. Bruising
One of the less obvious signs of hail damage is bruising. When hail strikes an asphalt shingle, the impact can damage the material beneath the surface without creating a visible crack.
A bruised area may feel softer than the surrounding shingle upon inspection. These soft spots indicate that the shingle’s internal structure has weakened. Over time, Florida’s heat, UV exposure, wind, and heavy rain can make that damage more significant.
2. Granule Loss
Asphalt shingles have a protective layer of granules that helps shield them from sunlight and weather. A hailstone can knock granules loose at the point of impact, leaving a bare or discolored spot.
Some granule loss happens naturally as shingles age, so finding loose granules does not automatically mean hail caused the problem. Hail-related loss often appears in concentrated impact areas. Severe impacts may expose the asphalt layer beneath the granules.
3. Splits and Other Damage
Hail can also cause splits, cracks, dents, or other damage that may not stand out during a quick visual check. The size and density of the hail, wind speed, roof age, roofing material, and angle of impact all affect what the damage looks like.
Other roof components can provide clues as well. Metal vents, flashing, gutters, and other exposed surfaces may show dents or impact marks after a hailstorm.
Schedule a Professional Roof Inspection in Central Florida
Hail damage is one reason homeowners should be cautious about judging a roof solely from the driveway. Walking on the roof yourself can also be dangerous and may cause additional damage.
A professional roofer knows where to look and how to distinguish possible storm damage from normal wear, aging, and other issues.
If hail has recently hit your Central Florida neighborhood, contact Taylor’s Roofing to schedule a professional roof inspection. Our team will check your shingles and roofing components for signs of damage and help you understand what your roof needs next.
